Ruins on the island.
Tilos is considered one of the most beautiful islands of the Aegean Sea. On its territory there are many high hills, from which you can enjoy beautiful views of the sea. It is replete with excellent sandy beaches that stretch along the coast for several tens of kilometers. On Tilos there is a whole scattering of ancient monasteries and classical Greek churches. They look especially elegant surrounded by the blue-blue expanses of the Aegean Sea, dense green vegetation and majestic rocky shores.
The resort has 2 ports – Livadia and Antonios. The 1st is characterized by exceptionally clear water and a pebbly coast. Near it are the ruins of the medieval fortress of Agriosikia, as well as the ancient churches of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas and the Virgin Politissa. Just to the east is a small village named after the goddess Hera. Its main religious attraction is the temple of Taxiarch Lifos. Not far from Hera, there is a place called Micro-Chorio, where you can admire the Church of the Immaculate Belt and the Church of the Savior. In the port of Agios Antonios, there is a wide sandy beach of Plaki, 2 kilometers from which stands the monastery of St. Peter the Great. Panteleimon. Eristios is considered the best beach in Tilos. It is distinguished by a gentle entrance to the water and the smallest soft sand. The island has 16 protected areas, where hundreds of exotic plant species grow. Rare bird species are a fascinating addition to them.
The capital of the resort is Megalo Horio. It is located at the foot of a majestic cliff, on top of which are the ruins of an ancient fortress. Among the most interesting objects here are the church of the Taxiarch, as well as a small museum where you can see the remains of a dwarf elephant found in the Harkadi cave.
The main life on Tilos is concentrated in the capital, as well as in the village of Livadia, where the tourist infrastructure is well developed, there are ideal conditions for sports and recreation. Local travel agencies offer tourists fascinating sightseeing routes around the island and boat trips to other islands of the archipelago. Avid fishermen can fish in the pristine waters of the Aegean Sea, and deep-sea divers can appreciate the incredible beauty of the “Kingdom of Neptune”. In the evenings, cozy restaurants and bars open their doors hospitably.
The hotel industry in the resort is not as diverse as in the major Greek island resorts. Among the most economical are the small hotels Portillo 4* and Seva’s studios 4. They have nice rooms with great sea views. Only a few hundred locals live permanently on the island, so there is always a calm and even family atmosphere.
The wonderful nature, the absence of the hustle and bustle that is characteristic of Crete, Rhodes and Halkidiki, the wonderful beaches, the clean air and the gentle waters of the Aegean Sea – this is an integral part of Tilos.
